JSO Scholarships

(updated 5/31/2010)

The Jazz Society of Oregon is proud to offer support for students of Jazz.

The JSO awards scholarships and tuition to encourage serious students of jazz to pursue their jazz studies. Awards are offered for private and group instruction, workshops, and master class participation.

To be eligible applicants must be in middle or high school and reside in Oregon or Clark County, Washington. Applications will be reviewed by the Education Committee and awarded on the basis of applicants' serious dedication to the study of instrumental or vocal jazz or theory, composition and arranging of jazz.

Typical awards range from $100 to $500 and are granted annually.

Winners and their groups may be invited to perform at JSO Board meetings or festivals to celebrate their talents.

If you are interested in receiving a scholarship from JSO, please provide the following:

  • An audio or video recording of your musical performance, if possible.
  • A letter of recommendation from your band director or music teacher addressing applicant's dedication, skill level and need.

Remembering Dick Bogle

A longtime Portland TV and print journalist, City Commissioner, police officer, KMHD on-air host and contributor to Jazzscene. Dick Bogle died February 25, 2010 in Vancouver, WA. He was the first African-American TV news anchor in Portland and the second elected to Portland’s City Council, the ninth African-American member of the Portland police force, and an advocate for jazz.

In response to requests from the public, The Jazz Society of Oregon has established an account for a “Dick Bogle Scholarship Fund.” Members of the community have already launched the fund, with several donations from Dick’s colleagues at KMHD. If you wish to contribute to this fund in memory of Dick Bogle, send a check to:
