LV's Uptown Jazz - September 1, 2006
Jessica Schultz - Marcus Reynolds Duo
Jessica Schultz - Vocals
Marcus Reynolds - Piano
It's a family affair at LV's tonight. Jessica's dad and Marcus's mom are in the audience; my sisters have joined me, and even club owner Darrell Grant, and his wife Anne are there with their darling son, Malcolm. And, as well as being a musical duo, Jessica and Marcus are married.
Jessica is a lovely, engaging vocalist. She opens with The Man I Love and displays a beautiful high range and a warm, low register. Marcus searches for the next tune and Jessica says, teasingly, "We found the tune. We have the same communication issues [on stage] that we have at home." Emily, she tells us was written by Johnny Mandel, who wrote the score for the film M.A.S.H. When I look him up, I find out he was born in 1925 and is a prolific composer and also wrote the score for The Sandpiper. Star Eyes is light and up-tempo. Marcus treats it with a Latin rhythm and takes a playful solo. He's having fun, which is contagious.
Jessica announces Bilhete, which means Ticket in Portuguese, a tune by Ivan Lins, a Brazilian composer. She says it has an empowering, heartbreaking lyric. Marcus echoes her emotion with his sensitive playing. Jessica has tears at the end, singing the final words, "Good luck and goodbye." Then she says, "We'll take it up," saying Triste, by Jobim is next, then, "Actually it's a sad lyric, but it's up-tempo, so you can't tell." Marcus gives it an appropriate Brazilian rhythm, which he does so well. They end with laughter.
When she announces they're going to perform Wouldn't it be Loverly, she and Marcus confer and she tells us, "He wants me to disclose I was Eliza in my high school musical." It's obvious he adores and is proud of her. They do a Kenny Kirkland tune Dienda, which Sting wrote lyrics to after Kenny passed too early, at age 43. Marcus has great technique, but it's obvious he feels the music, too. To end their set Jessica sings the pretty Honeysuckle Rose and demonstrates her tasteful phrasing.
Jessica and Marcus will be performing again October 7th and November 2nd at the Heathman Hotel.
LV's Uptown hosts music every Friday and Saturday nights, 7-10pm. No cover. It's a comfortable, all-ages, smoke-free venue. Their chef has created a very nice menu and they have a full bar. There's plenty of parking, too!
