Jean Ronne Quartet Weekend Swan Song - January 1, 2007

Jean Ronne made sweet music at the Benson Hotel on weekends for more than 30 years, starting in 1975. The venerable lobby court bar was the scene on Saturday evening of the final weekend curtain descending on so many years of wonderful jazz tune smithing on the keys, followed by her special New Year's Eve performance the following night.

Jean Ronne is one of the nicest people performing jazz in this town. She is always warm, friendly and approachable and a charming ambassador of jazz. Jean is like a skilled locksmith using the keys to unlock the best in the jazz standards she performs. The quartet plus one on Saturday night featured Lee Wuthenow on sax, Tim Gilson on standup bass, Neil Masson on drums and young Chance Hayden on electric guitar. This jazz ensemble flawlessly executed a smorgasbord of old standards including Sunny Side of the Street, Body & Soul; Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered, etc. These veterans are in synch after so many years of playing together. They are as tight as a cheap suit on a fat man! Chance Hayden, a student in the P.S.U. jazz program showed good chops, in league with these jazz veterans.

Jean will continue to perform weekday gigs and occasional weekend casuals & sub gigs for other musicians. While the music will continue at the Benson Hotel on weekends, Jean Ronne will be missed and appreciated as much in her absence has she has been in her presence. Thanks for the wonderful jazz memories over the last three decades, Jean Ronne, sweetheart of jazz.
