Poncho

by Redd Williams

Dim light grew dimmer
taut animal skins
slapping
salsa
reverberated
off
crumbling walls
and
ancient frescos listen in

multiple rhythms
impregnate the psyche
evoking
a
warmth of emotions
and
impulsive movements

sharp cracks
provoke
bongos and timbales
throughout
an upright bass
rumbles
a
rasping gourd
incite
a
piano to tidy up
the
melody
for that old standard
“watermelon man”
