or two
among the faintness
of
flickering candles

cozy oasis
to hear those
who have
mastered the arcane
mystery of jazz
local or itinerant
musicians
with the capacity
to stir
the listener's soul
by means of
intense performances

all the while
a
waitress weaves past tables
with
trays of groove juice
or
emotion lotion
for
the particular

ivory vibrating
to a syncopated beat
reverberating
horns
blown with an energy
that
moves around the melody
in a veritable display
of virtuosity
deep
dark round tones
of a vamping bass
adding
a spontaneity
and
melodic continuity
underpinning
a group sound
